EALL, 10 April 2009
A first round of talks from 6-9 April 2009 in Ankara has touched off the inception phase of a project that is likely to strengthen participation by NGOs in the Turkish legislative process...
Turkish organised interests
The EALL and the Directorate of Acts and Regulations of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) will cooperate closely on the project, allocating resources and expertise. The project is set to cover training and consultancy on issues relating to a more robust involvement of Turkish interest groups in the national lawmaking process. Current scope for the project is two years, with activities planned in both Turkey and the Netherlands. Funding for this project is provided by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. By way of the Social Transformation Programme (MATRA), an active contribution has been made to promoting security, cooperation and democracy in countries neighbouring the European Union (EU).
Recommendations
The project stems from recommendations made in the 2007 Progress Report for Turkey, in which the European Commission stressed that Turkish civil society should be further strengthened. This recommendation is part of an overall objective of the European Council to prepare civil society both in the EU and in candidate countries for future enlargement. |
